RAJKOT/GANDHINAGAR: Perturbed by the two high-intensity tremors in Kutch last week, Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA) has initiated a study on the pattern of seismic activity in Rapar and Bhachau, which fall under high-risk seismic zone along with Uttaranchal, Jammu and Kashmir and the North-East where earthquakes could cause extensive damage.

"We have started collecting data of the seismic activity to ascertain the pattern of the tremors originating from Kutch, so that an effective strategy could be evolved to deal with the increasing occurrence of tremors," says GSDMA CEO Rajesh Kishore.
He says it is difficult to forecast an earthquake, but seismologists engaged by the Gujarat Institute of Seismology have started collecting scientific details from geologists of India Meteorological Department (IMD) based at Bhuj and Bhavnagar and that of Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam at Kevadia Colony, who have been closely monitoring seismic events.
Kishore says that the institute will collect data and come to conclusion on the pattern of tremors after studying it. The institute will also prepare a seismic profile of places in Kutch and other vulnerable areas within one year.
The GSDMA has directed the collector of Kutch to educate people in villages on the eastern parts, mainly Rapar and Bhachau, to remain alert against the possible tremors in coming days.
A senior district development officer has, in collaboration with NGOs, formed teams of volunteers who will fan out in the interiors to educate people about the precautionary and preventive measures against tremors.
The state urban development authorities and municipal corporations have also been asked to see that builders strictly follow the guidelines on quake-resistant designs in various earthquake zones.

The state government is also contemplating a proposal to merge the activities of observatories of IMD at Bhuj and Bhavnagar and that of Kevadia Colony and entrust them to the state institute being set up near Raysan village on Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar highway.
The government is in process of appointing a director general of the institute, which has been allocated Rs 30 crore.
